Top Comedy Movies - Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Top Comedy Movies - Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Sony/Columbia movie "Paul Blart: Mall Cop” grossed $33.8 million last weekend, outgrossing last week's boxoffice champ, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino.”

Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures admitted the film was designed to be family entertainment. Whatta concept! Just like movies used to do, when they were making money all the time, for decades.

Is "Mall Cop" a masterpiece? No, but timing is everything. There's kind of a comedy drought right now, and that leaves a hole in the national schedule, that "Paul Blart" fills easily.

Studio expectations for the movie were about $25 million, but the audience surprised everybody at the studio by turning out in droves. “Paul Blart” will probably gross $40 million total, which sounds good, but actually falls short.

Why? The film cost $26 million to make, so the studio will match that amount in marketing costs. That means it must gross $52 million, just to break even.

We'll see. Good to see a Comedy Movie in the top slot, though.
