Top Comedy Movies - Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Top Comedy Movies - Paul Blart: Mall Cop

Sony/Columbia movie "Paul Blart: Mall Cop” grossed $33.8 million last weekend, outgrossing last week's boxoffice champ, Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino.”

Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony Pictures admitted the film was designed to be family entertainment. Whatta concept! Just like movies used to do, when they were making money all the time, for decades.

Is "Mall Cop" a masterpiece? No, but timing is everything. There's kind of a comedy drought right now, and that leaves a hole in the national schedule, that "Paul Blart" fills easily.

Studio expectations for the movie were about $25 million, but the audience surprised everybody at the studio by turning out in droves. “Paul Blart” will probably gross $40 million total, which sounds good, but actually falls short.

Why? The film cost $26 million to make, so the studio will match that amount in marketing costs. That means it must gross $52 million, just to break even.

We'll see. Good to see a Comedy Movie in the top slot, though.

Top Comedy Movies - Don't Mess With Zohan - Review

Top Comedy Movies - Don't Mess With Zohan - Review

What were they thinking? What were they smoking? Adam Sandler as an Israeli hairstylist? Nut case, too? That I can see, and I like Adam Sandler, and he's obviously still a movie star, but really...

Top Comedy Movies - Everybody Can't Be Hip

Golden Globes have come and gone, they're usually an indicator of something previous to the Oscars, and somehow connected, although not really, it's a tenuous connection at best.

So, really, knowing the Golden Globes is not really a prerequisite for hipness, at least here in Hollywood, but still...you should know something, right?

Maybe not. Maybe, having a newspaper column doesn't require you to know anything at all about the Golden Globes. Hipness, thou art in vain.

Top Comedy Movies - Just to be funny!

Top Comedy Movies - Just to be funny!

What is it about a man in baggy pants, a floppy hat,
or a weird moustache? (...Hey!)

Sophocles would say all comedy comes down to blindness.
Yes, it's cruel, but we all laugh when we watch a blind man.

The man in the weird garb can't see how silly he looks,
so we look at him, feel superior, and laugh.

That's the test, the laugh must be spontaneous and sincere,
something we just can't help doing. Ha ha!
